Plants currently blooming on the Palisades

Greenbrook Sanctuary and the Palisades are home to a large variety of  trees, wildflowers, shrubs and vines which provide a succession of blooms from early spring through autumn. Below are just a few of the plants currently in bloom.

SPOTTED JOE-PYE WEED  (Eupatorium maculatum)

Tapering leaves in whorls of 4 or 5. Pinkish or purplish flowers in a branching cluster. Deep purple or purple-spotted stem. A plant of moist meadows and thickets. Blooms from July to October. Found in Greenbrook at the bog. Composite family.

NEW YORK IRONWEED  (Vernonia noveboracensis)

Clusters of small purple flowers in heads of 30 to 50. Lance-shaped finely toothed leaves, 3 to 10 inches long. Stem 3 to 10 feet tall. Plant of moist meadows, thickets and fields. Blooms from July to September, most in August. Found in Greenbrook at the bog. Composite family.

SWAMP MILKWEED (Asclepias incarnata)

 A common milkweed of wet areas. Lance-shaped tapered leaves, 3 to 6 inches long. Leaves often downy beneath. Flowers pink to rose colored, Ό” long, in umbels. Stem 2 to 5 feet tall. Blooms from July to late August. In Greenbrook, at the pond edge. Milkweed family.

ASIATIC DAYFLOWER (Commelina communis) ----- Along entrance road.

DWARF CINQUEFOIL (Potentilla anserine) ----- “F” trail and other open areas.

HOARY MOUNTAIN MINT (Pycnanthemum incanum) ----- Dry woods throughout Palisades.

HYSSOP (Hyssopus officinalis) ----- Open, edge areas throughout the Palisades.

LANCE-LEAVED GOLDENROD (Solidago graminifolia) ----- Throughout the Palisades.

NARROW-LEAVED MOUNTAIN MINT (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium) ----- Along entrance road.

WHITE SWEET CLOVER (Melilotus alba) ----- Along the dam.

WHITE VERVAIN (Verbena urticifolia) ----- Fairfield.

VIRGINIA KNOTWEED (Tovara virginiana) ----- Woods and thickets throughout the Palisades.

YARROW (Achillea millefolium) ----- Along roadsides, trails and open fields.
