Plants currently blooming on the Palisades

Greenbrook Sanctuary and the Palisades are home to a large variety of  trees, wildflowers, shrubs and vines which provide a succession of blooms from early spring through autumn. Below are just a few of the plants currently in bloom.

FIELD HAWKWEED (
Hieracium pratense

Yellow, dandelion like flowers ½ to ¾ inches wide .Stem covered with blackish hairs. Upper and lower leaf surfaces covered with hair.  1 to 3 feet tall. A plant of fields, roadsides and open areas. Blooms spring to fall. Found in Greenbrook on the entrance road and on the Long Path in open, sunny areas. Composite family.

COMMON MILKWEED (
Asclepias syriaca)

Usually a single stem from 3 to 5 feet in height.  Leaves downy beneath, 3 to 9 inches long. Lavender to greenish-white flowers in dense clusters. Blooms June through August. In dry fields, along roadsides and waste areas. Our most common milkweed. In Greenbrook, along entrance road and other open areas throughout the Palisades. Milkweed family.

PRAIRIE ROSE (Rosa setigera)

Arching, trailing or climbing plant. Stems 4’ to 14’ long. Leaves with 3 ( rarely 5 ) egg-shaped, sharply toothed leaflets. Flowers, usually pink, 2 ½” across, in small clusters. Found in open woods, thickets and clearings; escaped from cultivation. Blooms late June through August. Rose family.

FOUR-LEAVED MILKWEED (Asclepias quadrifolia) ----- Picture Point.

HORSE NETTLE (Solanum carolinense) ----- At start of gravel road to pond.

MAPLE-LEAVED VIBURNUM (Viburnum acerifolium) ----- Dry woods throughout sanctuary.

PARTRIDGEBERRY (Mitchella repens) ----- Groundcover scattered along the Palisades.

PASTURE ROSE (Rosa carolina) ----- “S” field.

POKE MILKWEED (Asclepias exaltata) ----- “F” trail.

YELLOW SORREL (Oxalis europaea) ----- Open, sunny areas throughout the Palisades.

YELLOW STARGRASS (Hypoxis hirsuta) ----- Along trails throughout the Palisades.
