Palisades Interstate Parkway
The Palisades Interstate Parkway provides a scenic 42-mile ride from the George Washington Bridge to the Bear Mountain Bridge. About 11 miles of the Parkway are in New Jersey, from the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee to the New York state line at Alpine. It is listed as a Scenic Byway.
Rockefeller Lookout
Rockefeller Lookout (el. 400 feet) is a pull-off overlook in Englewood Cliffs, about 1 mile north of Parkway Exit 1 and accessible from the northbound Parkway only. No restrooms or other facilities are provided. It is opposite Spuyten Duyvil. Rockefeller Lookout is open 24 hours.
Alpine Lookout
Alpine Lookout (el. 430 feet) is a pull-off overlook in Alpine, about 3 miles north of Parkway Exit 1 and accessible from the northbound Parkway only. No restrooms or other facilities are provided. It is opposite Yonkers. Alpine Lookout is open 24 hours.
State Line Lookout
State Line Lookout (el. 520 feet) has its own unnumbered exit in Alpine, New Jersey, 2 miles north of Parkway Exit 2, accessible directly from the northbound Parkway and via a median U-turn from the southbound Parkway. A refreshment stand, gift shop, and restrooms are available.
A New Road
Demonstration mile | 1955
To show off what a Parkway would look like when complete, a “demonstration mile” was constructed in Englewood Cliffs by 1955. Local push back against the project ended in the creation of a new nature center within the park: Greenbrook Sanctuary.
A Parkway Opens | 1957
New York Governor Averell Harriman and New Jersey Governor Robert Meyner at the opening of the NJ Section of the Palisades Interstate Parkway, June 22, 1957. Others in attendance include the Rockefeller Family, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, and Robert Moses.
The Parkway is limited to passenger cars and motorcycles only. Trucks and cars pulling trailers, R.V.s/motor homes, and cars or pickup trucks with commercial or combination plates or business markings or advertising are prohibited on the Parkway.
Parkway Travel Permits are only issued for groups that are using the Palisades Interstate Parkway to transport students or children to or from a school or camp, or when transporting students or children on an educational or cultural fieldtrip in vehicles seating 15 or more passengers. Gas stations on the Parkway in New Jersey
Two gas stations are located in New Jersey, on both the southbound and northbound Parkway, south of Exit 1 in Englewood Cliffs. They are open 24 hours.
There is also a gas station 2 mi. north of the New York state line, in the median and accessible to both north- and southbound traffic, also open 24 hours.
